Introduction

The Castle Hotel is located in the Shropshire town of Bishops Castle and offers 8 guest rooms all with en-suite.
The building is nearly 300 years old and has been recently refurbished. Whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests there are some period features of the building which might make access difficult for people with limited mobility.

Pre-Arrival

We are located within the town of Bishops Castle on just of Church Street

Simply enter your post code and ours, which is SY9 5BN to get directions.
The nearest shops are approximately 20m away.
The nearest bus stops are just 50m outside the property. There is a small shelter and seating.
Craven Arms railway station is approximately 7 miles away, connecting with Craven Arms with Ludlow and Shrewsbury railway stations.
Taxis are usually available and we can book one for you in advance if required.
Birmingham Airport is 1 hour by car
We are a pet friendly hotel, but please check with us on an individual booking basis. We do of course welcome assistance dogs.

We have a private car park situated next to the hotel for customer use only
Access to our property is gained from the flagged pavement to the rear of the building

Welcome Area

Guests are welcomed in the hallway. Due to the age of the building some floors and wooden boards are slightly uneven.
The front of the building is accessed by five stone steps each of 16cm in vertical height.
Disabled and wheelchair access is located to the rear of the building directly into the private Castle Hotel car park.
Soft seating is available.
The area is well lit with overhead lighting and a table lamp.
Assistance can be given with luggage.

Bedrooms

Our guest rooms are accessed by means of stairs. There is a hand rail on one side. Due to the nature of the building we have no accommodation that is wheelchair accessible, and several bedrooms have exposed beams or sloping ceilings which may limit headroom. (NB bedrooms 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12). These rooms may not be suitable for guests with walking difficulties or impaired vision.
All rooms are en-suite Bathrooms, with either a shower or a bath or both
Room 1 and 4, our two 1st floor rooms are accessible up a total of eighteen step each of a vertical height of 16cm. The steps are broken into two separate flights with a small landing area after the initial eleven steps.
Rooms 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are located on our 2nd floor which is a further Eighteen steps leading from the 1st floor. These are 16cm in vertical height and are broken into three separate flights of steps of eight, three and seven with two small landing in-between.
Our beds are normally made up with duvets but sheets and blankets can be provided if preferred. Our standard pillows are polyester, however alternatives are also available. Please specify before your arrival if required.
All our beds are of a standard 60cm high with the duvets removed.
There is seating for two people, bedside tables, bedside lamps, a wardrobe, plus a chest of drawers/dressing table provided in each room.
Flat screen Freeview digital TV/DVD with subtitles available.

Public Areas – Halls, Stairs, Landings, Corridors

All public areas, hall, stairs, and landings are well lit using a combination of ceiling and table-lamps.
The hallway is oak flooring with carpets with non-slip backing.
There are no steps to the guest breakfast room or the downstairs toilet which lead off from the hallway and the bar respectively.
There are two stair cases leading from the ground floor to the first floor and then from the first floor to the second floor
The house is fully centrally heated throughout but temperatures can be adjusted in each room to suit individual requirements.
There are automatic audible smoke alarms in the main and upper halls and in each bedroom.

Public Toilet

There is a Male, Female and Disabled toilet, which is available to guests during the day/evening. Baby changing facilities are also available.
The toilet is located off the back bar to the rear of the building.

Dining Room

The breakfast/dining room is situated off the hallway on the ground floor and the entrance.
Large windows allowing plenty of natural light supplemented by adjustable overhead and wall lights.
There is a breakfast table where guests can help themselves to cereal, fruits, yoghurts, juices and toast. Assistance can be provided on request.

Garden

For guests we have a small paved rear terrace garden, with a number of tables and chairs available for food and drink consumption which is wheelchair accessible. This is also a designated smoking area with out-door heaters and ash trays provided.
There is a flight of stone steps that lead away from the rear terrace to our Castle Top gardens. This consists of a large lawn area with benches and a paved area with tables and chairs for the consumption of Food and Drink that has been purchased from the Castle Hotel. This is also a designated smoking area.

Additional Information

There are ‘In Case of Fire’ instructions listed in the guest information book provided in each room.
There is a “emergency diagram” on each floor of the building listing the location of all emergency exist, fire extinguishers and first aid kits in the building.
There is an information folder for each of the bedrooms with maps giving information on local pubs, travel, theatres and local golf facilities and area of local interest.
We have storage/drying facilities for golfers, cyclists, and walker’s equipment.
Free Broadband and Wi-Fi facilities are also available on request.
We are happy to cater for special diets or particular likes or dislikes. Please advise us before your arrival.
We can refrigerate prescription medication and additionally store any perishable food in our fridge for a limited period.
Mobile phone reception at is generally good for Orange and T-Mobile, but is poor for other network providers

The Bedrooms

We have twelve lovely bedrooms, all en-suite, TV, pillows, sheets, all mod cons you see. And all suffused with that "away from it all" feeling. Some bedrooms have lovely views of the town and the surrounding hills, and others look out over the fabulous hotel gardens.

The Gardens

The gardens really are a feature in their own right. South facing, you gaze over the top of the little town to the big hills beyond, serenaded by the tinkling waterfall in the adjoining lily ponds. Have lunch in style on the extensive decking area with seating for over 50 guests, shaded by vine-covered arbours.

Things To Do

With various activities to do close by you will never be short of things to do during your stay ion Shropshire at The Castle Hotel. Take a lazy stroll around the ancient cobbled streets of Bishops Castle or for the more energetic activities try some walking or cycling around the surrounding hills.

Bishops Castle

Bishops Castle is a small and ancient market town encircled by the South Shropshire Hills, and is only a few miles from the Welsh Border. It is approximately equidistant from Shrewsbury and Ludlow It therefore makes the perfect place to start your exploration of this beautiful corner of Britain.

Shropshire

Shropshire may be one of the countries quietest counties but don’t be deceived- there´s still plenty to see and do. Shropshire has over 90 places to visit – historic houses and castles with beautiful gardens, the famous Ironbridge Gorge, and several National Trust properties nearby, including Powis Castle and Attingham Hall.
