The Castle Hotel itself was built by Lord Carnarvon on the site of the original castle, and the hotel still occupies an elevated position at the top of Bishops Castle. So the wonderful hotel gardens provide the most magical vantage point to view the surrounding Shropshire Hills, preferably with a glass of something inebriating close to hand and the promise of dinner in the air.

The gardens really are a feature in their own right. South facing, you gaze over the top of the little town to the big hills beyond, serenaded by the tinkling waterfall in the adjoining lily ponds. There is an extensive decking area seating over 50 guests, shaded by vine-covered arbours, where your food and drinks can be taken in style. Spring and Summer brings the wide range of perennials into bloom.
This really is the perfect spot for a light repast, a cooling beverage and some idle meditation! Described by a guest recently as “probably the finest beer garden north of the St Tropez”! Who are we to argue?
