The visitor to Shropshire is spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing his tipple. Bishops Castle (population just 1600) is blessed with two breweries in the town itself, and several more within a few short miles. And at The Castle Hotel we stock a representative sample of these for your delectation. The town itself hosts a fantastic beer festival each year, when out come the marquees and barbecues, and joy is in the air.
We’re not just lovers of the amber nectar however – we also keep an extensive wine cellar, sourced mainly from our marvellous wine merchant, Tanners of Shrewsbury. But t’would be a lie to tell you we are blessed with a plethora of local vineyards. (Well there are one or two actually).
The Castle Hotel doubles as a traditional country pub and has three bar areas, each of which has either a log burner or open fire in the cooler months. All the bar areas can also be used for dining or drinking, as you prefer.
Beers on offer include several local brews such as Big Nevs from The Six Bells Brewery and Sterling from The Three Tuns, both located in Bishops Castle, Hobsons from Cleobury Mortimer and Cambrian Gold from Stone House Brewery in Oswestry. For more information on Local Real Ales and to arrange Brewry Tours click here. We have been listed by The Good Pub Guide for the last 15 years now!
The bar three areas range from a cosy wood paneled room, to the recently extended old public bar, which is light and airy. The bars also contain a selection of pub games such as Dominoes, Shut the Box, Darts and many others. This bar also leads onto a pretty paved terrace area (with waterfall) that then leads up some steps to the fantastic beer garden.
Here you can settle down round the fish-pond and grapevines, with a cooling drink and some great value food, and scour the surrounding hills for invading Celts, just like the old Bishop Of Hereford, the first inhabitant of The Castle at Bishops Castle.
