Shropshire

You don’t have to look hard to find things to do in Shropshire. If you enjoy communing with nature, shopping in quaint and historic towns, visiting magnificent castles and stately homes, or just eating and drinking local food and ale, then Shropshire is your kind of place.

Shropshire remains one the most unspoilt counties in the country, no doubt in part because it has no large industrial cities and is a predominantly rural county. This is perhaps surprising given that Ironbridge, in the east of the county, was the birthplace of industry, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Well worth a visit or three! Other major attractions include the Severn Valley Railway, the RAF Museum at Cosford and  Ludlow and Powis Castles, and Attingham Hall near Shrewsbury.

Shropshire has also had it’s moments of fame, most recently when  Acton Scott Working Farm was the location for the BBC’s Victorian Farm series.

And Shropshire is famously blessed with a plethora of medieval “black and white” buildings in it’s many historic towns and villages. Shrewsbury and Ludlow are perhaps best known, but many other smaller market towns are a delight to visit, including Much Wenlock (home of the modern Olympics), Church Stretton and its famous Cardingmill Valley, Clun (muse of the poet AE Housman and his “ Shropshire Lad” elegy to Shropshire), and Bishops Castle itself, of course.

The charming little market town of Bishops Castle is situated in right in the heart of The South Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), in the beautiful borderlands between England and Wales. And The Castle Hotel is in prime position at the heart of this lovely little town. Once tried, never forgotten!
